It all started in the Summer of 1953...
Nell Hong, Mary Fung, Beulah Kwoh and Elsie Ho thought it would be a good idea to gather their families together so the children could get to know other Chinese kids. Each of the "Founding Four" was asked to recruit family and good friends, and the first gathering occurred in the Hos' garage at 4184 South Arlington Avenue, Los Angeles.
Milton Quon and Bill Jong transformed the garage - Tina Ho swears she remembers sawdust on the floor! And so began the tradition of Milton and Tyrus art-directing invitations to our quarterly events, including Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas! Who remembers the moms organizing activities for each age group and then pulling kitchen duty at Elysian Lodge? Who remembers Charlie Fong dressing up like Santa Claus?
We ended up being about 30 families and 75 kids. The kids dropped out after high school, but the parents kept meeting. And what did we learn about matchmaking odds: there was one marriage among us! The Gordon Chuns and the Wing Mars SCORE!!!!
